2007 Scholarship Recipients

Jessica Curbo

Jessica is the daughter of Duane and Kathryn Curbo. Jessica is attending Sam Houston State University with a major interest in Agricultural Sciences and Education, and Animal Science. She is a member of the National Honors Society and was President for the 2006-2007 school year. 

Jessica is very involved in FFA and her church’s youth group. In FFA, she served on five separate officer teams, some at the district level. She served on her church’s Administrative Council as well as the Youth Council. Jessica’s goal is to become a High School teacher or remain in school to attain her doctorate and become a college professor.

Jonathan Hall

Jonathan is the son of Darrell and Sandy Hall. He is attending the University of Texas with a major interest towards finance and Christian outdoor ministry. Jonathan is a member of National Honor Society as well as Spanish Honor Society, and is active in his church and its student ministry. He is also involved in many sport activities. 

 

Jonathan was ranked 3rd in his class of 245, finishing a semester early. He maintains a very high GPA. Jonathan participated as a coach and referee for Upward Sports as an outreach to children within the church and community. Jonathan’s life goal is to own and operate a Christian youth camp. 

Kara Harris

Kara is the daughter of Steve and Tanya Erick. Kara is attending Newberry College in South Carolina with a major interest in the medical field. Kara is a member of National Honor Society and participated in volleyball and school clubs. 

 

Academics have always been important to Kara and she has always pushed herself in AP and honors classes. She took 4 college classes during high school including Anatomy and Physiology. Kara’s goal is to work in one of the many medical fields.

Jared Hindman

Jared is the son of Brian and Beth Hindman. He attends Texas A&M with a major interest towards Aeronautical Engineering. Jared is an AP scholar, a member of National Honor Society, and has logged over 200 hours of community service.

 

Jared excelled in the Nimitz Academic Decathlon program. In addition to his academic success, Jared donated much of his summer time to others. He was a camp counselor for pre teens in addition to helping during Vacation Bible School at his church. Jared hopes to intern at a major aerospace company with an ultimate goal of working for NASA.

Thomas Keetch III

Thomas is the son of Thomas and Linda Keetch. Thomas is attending Tarrant County College with a major interest in Firefighting, Fire Science and Emergency Medical Service. Thomas hopes to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a Firefighter/Paramedic. His goals are to progress through the ranks and become a chief officer. 

 

Thomas is active in his church and considered a leader within his youth and college classes. He is also involved in music and baseball. Thomas also umpired boys’ baseball for four years. Thomas values his responsibility of being a role model and is proud of family that is very close.

Chandra Klassen

Chandra is the daughter of Bob Klassen. She is attending El Centro College with a major interest towards Interior Design. Chandra is a member of National Honor Society and has participated in many clubs and sport activities during school.

 

Chandra has participated in many charitable events such as Irving Firefighters’ Blue Christmas toy drive which benefits less fortunate children in Irving.  In addition to being involved in church activities, she does volunteer work for Hospice Plus, and maintains a high GPA as a full time student.

David “Nicolas” Morgan

Nicolas is the son of David and Jana Morgan. Nicolas is attending LeTorneau University with a major interest in Business. Nicolas is a member of National Honor Society and is very active within his church and his community. Nicolas has worked at the Salvation Army, food bank, and his local recreation center as well as his church. 

 

Nicolas hopes to continue playing baseball in college while maintaining his high academic standing. He hopes to extend his baseball career beyond his college years.  Nicolas’s goal is to own his own successful business.

Lisa Spagnolo

Lisa is the daughter of Jeff and Kathy Spagnolo. Lisa is attending Texas Woman’s University with a major interest in Pre-Med. Lisa is a member of National Honor Society and graduated in the top 10% of her class. 

 

Lisa currently holds the position of House of Representative for Eta Sigma Gamma, which is a Health Studies Honor Society. She is also a Resident Assistant on campus.  Lisa has a goal of graduating Suma Cum Laude and is pursuing a medical degree.

Stacy Spagnolo

Stacy is the daughter of Jeff and Kathy Spagnolo. Stacy is attending the University of North Texas with a major interest in Elementary Education. Prior to attending UNT, Stacy graduated from Collin College Community College with an Associates Degree and was recognized for the Academic Dean’s list in 2003. Over the last two years at UNT, Stacy has also been recognized for the College of Education Academic Dean’s List. 

 

Stacy is currently enrolled in her first semester of Student Teaching. She became certified as a substitute teacher in 2006 for two local school districts. While taking fifteen hours at UNT, Stacy worked as substitute teacher in elementary classrooms on the days she wasn’t in class.

Sarah Spencer

Sarah is the daughter of Scott and Susan Spencer. Sarah is attending Texas A&M University with a major interest in Biomedical Science. Sarah is a member of National Honor Society. She was the Vice-President of the biology club and a member of student council. Sarah believes being involved at A&M is very important. She is involved in several student based organizations. 

 

Sarah’s goals are to graduate from A&M with a Biomedical Science degree and go on to physical therapy school and become a physical therapist for disabled children.  She hopes to someday work in a children’s hospital as a physical therapist.

 

  • Must be a child of current or retired Irving Firefighter or Fire Prevention Specialist

  • Is currently attending high school or post high school education or training

  • Maintains 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or higher on a 4.0 scale

  • Post high school students must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale for the year prior to application.

  • Has completed all current application requirements

  • Is not related to a selection committee member

  • Submit questionnaire

  • Submit essay on why they deserve the scholarship

  • Demonstrates at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale for the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades

  • Demonstrates accomplishments in leadership

  • Demonstrates accomplishments in community service

  • Application DeadlineMarch 1st preceding enrollment of the fall semester

  • Recipients may reapply annually and must maintain a 3.0 (GPA) on a 4.0 scale

  • Scholarships can be used for any type of post–high school education or training —certification, licensing, two or four year trade and technical school, or two or four year college, except post-graduate studies.
